Founder of Timmonsville, SC - John Morgan Timmons

Rev. John Morgan Timmons (1800-1869)


SC Gov. James Hamilton, Jr. granted The
1,384 acres of land.

Later he bought a pine stand that became Timmonsville, SC.

He founded the town of Timmonsville in 1854 when he set the railroad path through Northeast SC and negotiated purchase of the land.

John Morgan signed the SC Ordinance of Succession in 1860.

He founded and was the first pastor of Hebron Baptist Church located at Friendfield, SC.

He also succeeded his uncle Rev. Samuel Timmons as pastor of Elim Baptist Church.

John and Elizabeth are both buried at the Elim Baptist Church Cemetery.

    1. Mel, I just saw your comment here (not sure if you'll see this). I'm also descended from his brother, William James Timmons II (1802-1846) and Elizabeth Eaddy. My line is through their daughter, Mary Ellen Timmons (1842–1876) who married Joseph Franklin Hanna (1817-1891). What branch are you?

    3. Actually, family comes from your Williams Uncle Isaac Timmons b. 1779. Got my Williams mixed up. Isaac had Henry Isaac Timmons(1833-1864) who had William Morgan Timmons(1858-1934)
      Your William would be Isaac's nephew. Isaac is my ggggrandad.

  2. what is the real history of Timmonsville; why did everyone leave and where did they go. My last visit 1980's no Timmons were left. The library noted a book of Timmons family with no copy there. Anyone with a reference?
