Ruth Ard Carmon, 1928-2014

Mrs. Ruth Ard Carmon of Timmonsville, passed away Sunday, March 9, 2014 at Carolinas Hospital Systems in Florence after an illness. She was the wife of the late Julian "J.P." Carmon.

Ruth was born in Sumter County, a daughter of the late Jesse James Ard and Mattie Marie Horton Ard. She is preceded in death by her husband, Julian "J.P." Carmon, a sister, Mae Ard Maker and two brothers, Johnny Ard and Ernest Ard.

Mrs. Carmon is survived by her two daughters, Carol Diane Carmon and Evelyn Marie Carmon and her son, Ronnie P. Carmon, all of Timmonsville.

Ruth attended Florence Baptist Temple. She was 86 years old. She lovingly spent her life as a homemaker.

The funeral service will be held at 2pm Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at Floyd Funeral Home Chapel on 136 E Main St, Olanta, SC 29114.

A family visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral service.


Mrs Carmon will be laid to rest at the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Florence County SC.

William Leroy "Bill" Bochette, 1943-2014

William Leroy "Bill" Bochette was 70 when he went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, March 5, 2014, at McLeod Hospice House.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm on Friday, March 7, 2014 at the Stoudenmire-Dowling funeral home.

Bill was born in Darlington County, and raised in Lamar,SC. Many in Lamar knew him as W.L. He was a son of the late Marion Bochette and Daisy Dowdy Bochette.

Bill was very active in his community, as he was a faithful member of Florence Baptist Temple for thirty-nine years, he served as a Bus Captain, a Deacon, and a Sunday School Teacher.

Because he loved sports and the Christian School, he was always ready to support the athletic programs. He was an active member of the Booster Club at Florence Christian School.

Mr. Bochette was a 1961 graduate of Lamar High School and later attended the University of South Carolina, where he received his Bachelor Degree in Business Administration in 1971. 

Bill was a veteran having served his country in the US Navy.

He retired from Smurfit-Stone Container and later was a greeter at Chick-Fil-A, which he thoroughly enjoyed.

Surviving is his devoted wife, of fifty years, Priscilla Hill Bochette; Priscilla haled from Lamar as well. Bill and Priscilla were the proud parents of  three children who mourn his passing. They are, Brad (Cathi) Bochette of Savannah, GA, Tracy (John) Brown  and Clay (Carrie) Bochette, both of Florence.

He was affectionately known as "DiDiDa" by his six grandchildren: Chapin Bochette, Caroline Bochette, Camryn Bochette, Brooke Brown, Ashlyn Bochette and Clayton Bochette.

Also surviving are his brother, Don Bochette of Eutawville, SC, his sister, Linda (Wayne) Wolfe of Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia, an aunt, Pearlie Mae Benton, uncle Charles (Georgie) Dowdy, and a number of cousins, nieces and nephews.

Have you ever heard of the NATIONAL MONUMENT TO THE FOREFATHERS? This monument took over 100 years to build and was finished in 1889. It is located in Plymouth, Massachusetts. It is largely forgotten today. It is approximately 1 mile from Plymouth Rock. I bet you've heard of that, right?

This monument contains the Blueprint for America which is Faith, Morality, Law, Education, and Liberty.

Mattie Lee Dowling Browning, 1926-2014

RIDGEVILLE, S.C. - Mattie Lee Dowling Browning, 87, of Ridgeville, died in her home on Saturday morning, March 1, 2014, following a long illness. Born in Darlington County on May 6, 1926, she was the last surviving child of James Muldrow Dowling and Agnes Yarborough Dowling. The Muldrow Dowling family made their home in the Philidelphia community of Darlington SC, known at the time at Rural Route 2, Timmonsville.

 At the age of 19, Mrs. Browning graduated from Coker College in January 1946 and began her career as a teacher at Ridgeville High School. Her distinguished teaching career included many years at Ridgeville and St. George schools. 

She was well known for her faithful service and support of the Mount Tabor United Methodist Church in Ridgeville.  She was an extremely knowledgeable county historian and founding Director of the Upper Dorchester County Historical Society.

Mrs. Browning was predeceased by her husband of sixty years, John Henry Browning, Sr., and her daughter, Madelyn Browning Knight. She was preceded in death by her siblings: Margaret Clayton, Florrie Sansbury, Mamie Tallon,  James Dowling, and Willie Dowling.

Mrs. Browning is survived by sons John Henry Browning, Jr. of Ridgeville and Col. Robert (“Robin”) Walker Browning (wife, Elizabeth) of Lilburn, Georgia. Her prized grandchildren are Losse F. Knight, III (“Trey”) and his wife Heather of Mt. Pleasant, Sarah Browning of Alpharetta, Georgia, Captain R. Daniel Browning, USAF of Sacramento, California, Lauren Browning Martin (husband, Zach) of Wilmington, North Carolina,  John W. Browning of Jedburg, and his twin sister Jessica L. Browning of Asheville, North Carolina. Mrs. Browning is also survived by many cherished nieces and nephews in the Browning and Dowling families.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 3, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. at the Mount Tabor United Methodist Church. Visitation will be at the church from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. that day. Burial services will follow the church service at Bonnerest Cemetery in Ridgeville. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church, 244 S. Main St., Ridgeville, SC 29472, or Upper Dorchester County Historical Society, UDCHS, PO Box 15, Dorchester, SC 29437.
