Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane has died.

Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane has died. In real life, he was James Best, a wonderful character actor.
Best died Monday night, April 6, 2015 in hospice care from complications of pneumonia.

We all loved the giggling and goofy Sheriff character he played on television's "The Dukes of Hazzard,"

James Best was born as Jewel Franklin Guy on July 26, 1926, in Powderly, Kentucky. His mother was the sister of Ike Everly, the father of the pop duo 'The Everly Brothers'. After his mother died of tuberculosis in 1929, then three-year-old James was sent to live in an orphanage. He was later adopted by Mr and Mrs Armen Best and moved to Indiana.

Beginning his acting career in 1950, he guest-starred more than 280 times in numerous television series. But he was best known for his Sheriff character who was the lawman futilely chasing those Duke boys, often in the company of his droopy-faced basset hound Flash. He was Rosco P. Coltrane on CBS's The Dukes of Hazzard which debuted in 1979 and ran until the series ended in 1985.

"I acted the part as good as I could," Best told The Charlotte Observer in 2009. "Rosco, let's face it, was a charmer. It was a fun thing."

He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Dorothy Best.
